I’m trying to see 10 concerts this year, and I’m only four shows in so far. Luckily, this Fall has a ton of amazing musical artists coming to the D.C. area, starting with Sara Bareilles at the Anthem on Sept. 12 and 13.
Bareilles’ latest album Good Grief is a meditation on loss and love after losing two of her best friends to stage-four cancer. One of the best friends she’s grieving is Gavin Creel, who was a personal and professional bestie (the two were costars on Waitress and Into the Woods). Creel (whom I was a fan of after seeing him in the musical revival of Hair) died of an aggressive, metastatic sarcoma in 2024.
If you’re a fan of Bareilles’ music and want to join me at the concert, get your tickets here.
Here’s what professional critics had to say about Good Grief:
“[Good Grief] is an intimate, revealing portrait” -The Hollywood Reporter
“The language of the album title is not incidental, as much of the material was informed by the singer-songwriter dealing with lingering feelings of grief after losing one of her best friends, as well as topical feelings about the state of things.” -Variety
“A reflection on loss and the power of healing” -Rolling Stone
Check out a video of the touching song “Just a Kid” about her other best friend who passed in 2019, Chad Joseph, who was Bareilles’ tour manager and best pal since college:
