As I said in our feature about Little Sesame, if there’s one silver lining to all this time at home together it’s the opportunity to have more family meals together. These days, at least once a week (usually a weekend), we order in as a way to support local restaurants (and giving my husband a break from everyday cooking). Last time we featured a D.C. restaurant specializing in roasted chicken dinners, and this time we’re highlighting a new sushi place in the same neighborhood: Kura Sushi at 614 H Street NW Suite #100, Washington, DC 20001.

If you were to eat in, Kura Sushi, whose parent company has run sushi restaurants since 1977, offers the following:

  • Revolving Sushi Bar Belt
  • Ordering Touch Panels
  • Express Belt (made-to-order requests)
  • Bikkura Pon Prize System

But, we aren’t comfortable eating inside a restaurant right now, so we ordered our meal for takeout. Those who live within the delivery range, however, can take advantage of Grubhub delivery. Kura Sushi offered us a complimentary family meal in exchange for our review.

Here’s the thing. Our family consists of two parents who like sushi but aren’t in any way sushi connoisseurs, one vegetarian/occasionally pescatarian teen daughter who is very picky about the seafood she eats, and two sons (one 18, one 12) who really don’t eat seafood unless there’s literally nothing else to eat. So we weren’t sure how this meal was going to go for the kids, but in the end there was so much variety we were all fans.

We tried a lot of food, because with sushi you need anywhere from 6-10 pieces per person for dinner:

  • Garlic Ponzu Red Snapper
  • Tuna Nigiri
  • Seared Salmon Nigiri
  • Seared Scallop Nigiri
  • Red Dragon Rolls
  • Salmon Golden Crunchy Rolls
  • Shrimp Avocado Rolls
  • Salmon Skin Rolls
  • Avocado Hand Roll
  • Cucumber Hand Roll
  • Veggie Hand Roll
  • Spicy Tuna Hand Roll
  • Edamame
  • Crispy Chicken
  • Beef Ojyu
  • Soft Shell Crab Tempura
  • Chicken Gyoza Dumplings
  • Harajuku Summer Salad
  • Ramen

While we liked everything we ordered, our standout favorites were the Seared Salmon Nigiri, the Shrimp Avocado Rolls, the Spicy Tuna Hand Roll, the Tuna Nigiri, the Crispy Chicken, the Salmon Golden Crunchy Rolls, and the Avocado Hand Roll. We also appreciated that the price point for the meal is really accessible, considering how expensive sushi can get. If your family likes sushi and wants to outsource a meal to a local restaurant, definitely give Kura Sushi a call (or order from Grubhub).
