sophies2Disclosure: I was treated to a tasting menu at Sophie’s Cuban. It was such a wonderful lunch. I was not required to write about my visit. Thank you, Sophie’s – and welcome to the neighborhood!

My office is located at 21st and M, and quite possibly the best thing about the location is the access to great restaurants for lunch. Until a few days ago, it seemed we had everything – except a great Cuban joint. Enter: Sophie’s Cuban.

Sophie’s Cuban, located at 1134 19th Street, NW serves authentic Cuban food— fast. You can order your meal online and have it ready to be picked up when you arrive. Or, if you’re willing to linger a bit, take the time to walk through the buffet line and enjoy the sunny upstairs dining area.

I visited Sophie’s Cuban for lunch during its opening and strongly recommend the salmon (which is extremely juicy), the fried sweet plantain, and the fried green plantain. I smothered the latter with an amazing green sauce that was on the table. That sauce was delicious enough to drink.

Being in Sophie’s was like heading to Miami for a lunch break. I’ve already been back for the plantains.

When she’s not testing the take-out at area eateries, Elaine enjoys life with kids.
