sleepingDressIf you’re looking for a fun outing for your children ages 4+ this weekend – then head straight to Encore Stage and Studio to catch their creative version of Sleeping Beauty. My 5 year old daughter and I attended the show last weekend and from the time the curtain rose to the final drop, she was entranced. The show is playing at Thomas Jefferson Community Theatre (125 S. Old Glebe Rd. Arlington, VA 22204). Remaining show times are Friday, June 14 1t 7:30 PM and Saturday June 15 and Sunday June 16 at 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM.

Like many parents of young children, I’ve read a number of versions of the tale of Briar Rose. The script written for Encore Stage and Studio is exquisite. The shows moves at a great pace for young audiences, and the actors kept the energy level high – particularly the palace chef, who delivered his lines with gusto and impeccable timing. Evilina, the evil witch who casts the spell on our heroine, Briar Rose, was just scary enough to make her seem real, but not scary enough to cause my daughter to be uncomfortable. And of course, the princess herself was captivating and very much met the very stringent test of ” real princess” for my daughter.

As is common at Encore Stage and Studio, the show was staffed with young actors – ranging from elementary school to high school. And as is also common, my daughter and other children in the audience absolutely loved seeing a peer acting on a “real stage”. The production has inspired the building of our own “real stage” and castle so far – which makes it easily worth the $10 – $12 price of admission.

From Encore Stage and Studio:

Encore Stage & Studio invites you to fall in love again with Sleeping Beauty, an amusing and playful presentation of the well-known fairytale. When Princess Briar Rose is born, the King and Queen throw a celebration to welcome their new daughter. The whole kingdom is invited, save for one truly wicked witch. In revenge, Evilina sends the young Princess an unforgettable birthday gift—a sleeping spell which can only be broken by true love’s kiss. Special pre-performance music will be provided by Prelude Youth Orchestra on June 8 & 9 at the 3:00 pm performances. Recommended for ages 4 and up.
