The recession may technically be over but it is still being felt by most and this is reflected again this fall fashion season by what is trending. Colors are classic and very in tune with going back to school. There is a lot of “shopping your closet” that will take place in the next few months.  Regardless of the economy, that is a good thing.  Four trends that you are going to see all over and can incorporate easily are as follows.

1.  Black lace and leather are around again this season.  Personally, I think this is fantastic since I am ready to break out last year’s black leather jacket and black lace blouse.  The twist this season is the addition of crosses.  Skulls, crosses and anything like that adorned with black beading or black and silver crystals is right on trend.  It’s a bit of a 90s throwback, but what isn’t these days?

2.  Needlepoint.  Yes, you heard me.  It may seem old-fashioned and like something from your granny’s day, but it can also be incredibly fun. If you like thrifting or going through old castaways from great aunt Ethel.  Seen in household decor, like Jonathan Adler’s adorable paperweights, needlepoint can’t be pinned down.  It is on shoes from boots to ballet flats, purses, pants, jackets and even dresses this fall season.

3.  Herringbone and Tweed just scream fall and going back to school.  Whether it is at the home, office or campus you cannot go wrong with a herringbone blouse, a fitted tweed jacket or vest. Lands End has affordable options on all these items. Pair it with a leather wrist-band watch and classic tasseled loafers and you are looking very smart.  You can probably pick a lot of these items up second-hand too.

4.  Color combinations for fall tend to be gorgeously neutral with pops of color.  A camel colored pant or coat combined with cobalt blue accessories or shoes looks divine.  An animal printed skirt and black shirt or sweater that you already own can be spruced up by adding a hot pink pair of shoes or belt.  The key is to keep the background and main items in your outfit in neutral tones. Colors like cream, camel and black look amazing when you add bright accessories via a clutch purse, bracelet, pair of earrings or shoe.  Shades of chartreuse, cobalt blue (seen in large quantities at Banana Republic), neon pink and Olympic red are going to be everywhere this fall.

Go forth, shop your closet, add some new items that can update your look and get ready for fall!
