The months between September and November can be a bit of a fashion challenge, especially here in the DMV. I love it because layering can go into full effect. I pick from every season in my wardrobe while still shopping some fantastic end of summer sales.  I won’t tell you to layer tights under your shorts.  Trust me, I wore that trend to death enough for the whole planet back in 1993.  No, it is all about taking a simple shirt-dress with its cute rope belt and turning it into a fall staple by mixing it with fall/winter clothing you already own.

Dresses are my favorite way to transition from summer to fall. You can layer a turtleneck, simple long sleeve t-shirt or crew neck under a shift, shirt or sundress for added depth and warmth. Pair it with a cute pair of flats or boots and you can head out the door.  The addition of a belted cardigan or boyfriend sweater can make the dress go beyond fall and into winter too.

Those skinny capri’s you have been wearing to every summer party can say good-bye to the sleeveless button down and sandals and hello to some jewel or metallic flats paired with a long sleeve button down and crew neck sweater. Add heavier jewelry like a chain link bracelet or baroque cuff for weight.  Placing a fitted jacket or belted trench over top creates a look that says you are ready for fall.
