  • Restaurant NameFranklin’s Restaurant, Brewery and General Store
  • Cuisine: American Brew Pub
  • Cost: 2 kids’ meals + 2 adult dinners costs us about $40 (not including beer!)
  • Location: 5121 Baltimore Ave., Hyattsville, MD 20781
  • Must Haves: Any of the seasonal specials, the buttermilk onion rings (plan on sharing them!), a burger or the vegetarian flatbread.

Franklin’s Restaurant, Brewery and General Store in Hyattsville, MD, is one of our favorite family-friendly restaurants.

Why we love it: Because it has something for everyone in our family!

First, there’s the restaurant: good food, a great kid’s menu, very child-friendly atmosphere (you know, loud enough that your kids won’t get dirty looks but not so loud that you’re shouting at your spouse!).

Then there’s the brewery: awesome craft beer, brewed right on sight (we love sitting upstairs near the tanks!). You can even purchase a growler to take home and bring back for refills!

And, last but not least, there’s the store. This — in addition to their fabulous grilled cheese sandwiches — is why Franklin’s is the absolute most favorite restaurant of our 5 year old son, Lucas. The General Store is so, so cool. The store is filled from floor to ceiling with awesome and unique toys. They have old-fashioned penny candy and yummy gourmet chocolate. They have fabulous stationary, beautiful jewelry, silly 50’s housewife magnets, funny nun calendars and so much more! They also stock fabulous wine and tons of craft beer (we nearly always pick up a 6 pack!).

Bottom line: Beyond the food, the beer, the atmosphere and the perfect bribes found in the General Store, we love that Franklin’s has a real sense of community. We almost always run into someone we know at Franklin’s and we always look forward to their community fundraising events, where 20% of your bill (including food, alcohol and purchases at the store) goes directly to the school or non-profit they are supporting that night.

I hope to see you there sometime soon!

We love Franklin’s, too! My beer-loving hubby is always happy with the selection, and the kids always find something they like on the menu. I have to say that I always feel a little bit cooler when I leave, because there’s a funkiness to the place that is enjoyable, and it’s a nice change from the typical chain-restaurants that most families with young children opt for!

Eating out with the kids still isn’t relaxing for Mr. Quimby and me, so we don’t eat at Franklin’s regularly, but I LOVE shopping at Franklin’s for two things: beer/wine and children’s birthday party gifts. Buying beer and wine there is SO much less skeevy than a liquor store, and the selection of childrens toys, games, and dress-up clothes is fantastic. It is my go to place (and the only place between Bethesda and Annapolis) that has Melissa & Doug and European type toys. I do wish they would add some sort of gift receipt option and a little sticker or card so that the recipient knows it is from Franklin’s
